There is much debate whether the environmental effects of coal mining justify its continued use. Coal is either extracted from deep inside the earth or removed from its surface. The former is known as underground mining, the latter as strip mining or mountaintop removal. Either process contributes a high level of damage to the environment:
Coal prices at surface mines are generally lower than prices at underground mines. In locations where coal beds are thick and near the surface, such as in Wyoming, mining costs and coal prices tend to be lower than in locations where the beds are thinner and deeper, such as in Appalachia.
Coal. The LQD regulates the permitting of coal production in the state. The LQD''s regulations include issuing a variety of permits for coal mining activities, preparing cumulative hydrologic impact assessments (CHIA), and issuing annual reports on coal mining sites around the state.
The history of coal mining goes back thousands of years. It became important in the Industrial Revolution of the 19th and 20th centuries, when it was primarily used to power steam engines, heat buildings and generate electricity. Coal mining continues as an important economic activity today.
